Chief Usher Rex Scouten Awards Maitre d'Hotel John W. Ficklin

In this photograph, taken February 24, 1971, White House Chief Usher Rex Scouten presents Maitre d'hotel John W. Ficklin (third from the left) with a sign proclaiming "Amissville kid makes good!" during a staff event honoring Ficklin's service. The sign probably references Ficklin's birthplace in rural Rappahannock County, Virginia. Ficklin served as a member of the White House domestic staff for 43 years prior to his retirement in 1983. This photograph is part of a collection belonging to former White House Executive Chef Henry Haller. Henry Haller served as the White House Executive Chef from 1966-1987. Haller stands on the far right side of this photograph.
